The Story of the Witte Memorial Museum, San Antonio: San Antonio Museum. The facility was known as the Witte Memorial Museum untilwhen the name was simplified to the Witte Museum. The museum survived financial struggles during the Great Depression and World War II through activities that included operation of a reptile garden, a popular natural history attraction adjacent to the museum.

The Witte Memorial Museum opened on October 8,as an institution devoted to natural history, Texas history, and the arts and sponsored by the San Antonio Museum Association, the San Antonio Conservation Society, and the San Antonio Art League.
